Symbols are often seen as constituting an international language and to some extent they do, but that language is far from universal--context means everything in this complicated but engrossing form of communication.

Take, for example, a cross, a crane, or a swastika each one has a different and distinct significance and meaning for a Buddhist, an art historian, or a student of the occult. 1000 Symbols resolves the problem by offering groupings of related symbols, every one with a neat definition of its history and its cross-cultural meanings.

"This is a REALLY interesting book. I'm an artist (mostly painter, but also do illustration) and I do a lot of tiny, intricate patterns in my work. Despite the abundance of pattern inspiration available in the world, a lot of times I get a little stuck as far as simple designs I can use for repeating patterns when I'm in the middle of a piece. This book is a fabulous resource- not only does it provide literally a thousand symbols, it provides a few paragraphs of information on each symbol. It sort of lets me take my work to another level- instead of just drawing random designs, I can actually incorporate meaningful icons into the patterns I create. I can also take the symbols (which are each illustrated in a clean, clock line drawing) and use them as a starting point for a design or unique symbol all my own.

This is a great source of inspiration for artists and designers, and a great book for anyone interested in iconography and symbols in general."

  • Please don't get this book if you want a repository of images to use in your projects. If on the otther hand, you want a great variety of information as a basis for exploration then this book is perfect for you. This book is a very good place to start if you want to know about symbols and it categorizes them quite neatly even going into shapes, colors and numbers. I enjoy the fact that they did not use classical representations of the pictures but their own interpretation of it. In the Internet age you can find such pictures easily. As an artist, this book gives me enough information about each symbol without going into too much detail so I find it useful. With over 300 pages, the book is bigger than I imagined but well worth its weight. Do not buy this if you are looking for an indepth analysis but rather an extensive overview. I hope this helps.
  • Lots of symbols
  • not what I was looking for, but found some symbols I didn't know or even thought about...
  • Love this book, how it's set up, love the index, but most of all love the descriptions of various cultures' ideas about same symbol, a smorgasbord of meanings providing options for personal symbolism and spirituality.

    Good book.
  • This particular book is tops.Excellent! What more is there to say? Well illustrated and explained in detail every meanings symbol and origin.
perfect reference material for every age.
  • This seems to be information that a friend needs for her work.
  • Very happy with my book!
