Enlightenment Now The Case for Reason Science Humanism and Progress Audible Audio Edition Steven Pinker Arthur Morey Penguin Audio Books Reviews

  • Pinker argues that humanism (a reasoned commitment to maximizing human flourishing), science, and democracy have resulted in substantial, measurable human progress over the last 500 years. There are 17 chapters setting out evidence (illustrated in some 75 charts) that globally humans are living longer healthier lives (pp. 53-67); developing agricultural methods that are making great strides toward eliminating famine (68-78); increasing per capita income and reducing income inequality (71-120); working on technology and global cooperation to address pressing environmental problems (121-55); decreasing war-related deaths (156-66); increasing safety (167-90); reducing deaths caused by terrorism (191-98); adopting democratic forms of government that promote higher economic growth (200); spreading equal rights (214-32); increasing literacy and the quality of education (247-61); dramatically improving the quality of life (247-61); leading happier lives (262-89); and addressing the existential threats of overpopulation, resource shortages, and the threat of nuclear war (290-321). The book is not triumphalist but consistently evidence-based. I do not have the expertise to assess the details of the evidence Pinker relies on, but he does cite recognized authorities. And some of his conclusions are irrefutable. People are living longer. They are better fed. The rule of law does make people living in democracies safer.
Despite some criticism to the contrary, Pinker does recognize that we still have a long way to go in providing food security, a living wage, and better health to some seven hundred million people who still live in extreme poverty (e.g., 87-89; 325). His argument is that we are not wasting money on trying to eliminate world poverty, that we have made substantial progress in reducing the number of people in extreme poverty by getting some things right. Communism has failed, totalitarian, planned economies are in retreat, and market economies coupled with improved agricultural practices and access to global markets have lifted billions out of extreme poverty in the last 75 years (89-96).
Pinker argues we should think scientifically, not that we should let science decide value questions (390-91). A scientific approach is based on two characteristics the world is intelligible and we should allow the world to tell us whether our ideas about it are correct (329-93). We should let the facts on the ground, not our tribal, cultural allegiances, guide us toward policies and practices that help all people flourish (357-69).
Many will find Pinker's rejection of religion as a guide to human flourishing (30, 392-94, 421, and 428-33) disquieting, if not repulsing. I don't think that argument is essential to the book's main message. Human flourishing is a goal that all of the many religions that populate the globe can agree with. As Pinker points out, basic moral rules have always been agreed to by all societies. He asserts that two thousand five hundred years ago Plato argued in Euthyphro that the gods are not necessary to tell us what is moral (428). We all know that we should treat others as we would like to be treated ourselves, that we should not cause injury to others, or steal their property. Our religious disagreements are not about morality but prescribed practices, rituals, and theological beliefs. Those conflicts should not get in the way of all of us, whatever our religion beliefs, supporting secular society's goal of promoting human flourishing.
  • This book is Steven Pinker‘s masterpiece. If you choose just one of his books to read, this is the one. He takes an optimistic view of the current political and social upheavals plaguing our world and puts them in context with both recent and ancient history.

In his perfect-pitch prose, Pinker makes the case that although many people decry the times in which we live, he disagrees, in essence saying, “let the good times roll.“ He doesn’t think we’re nearing the end of The Enlightenment, either — he thinks it’s a set of ideas and a way of reasoning that can and should be renewed with each successive generation.

He cites numerous statistics showing how people are richer, wealthier, and live longer than any other time in history. There are hundreds of examples that give ample reason for optimism as we navigate this era of confusion and frustration in U.S. and world politics.

Enlightenment Now is a long and dense book, but be sure to read it all the way to the end, because all through this masterful narrative of our society, there are some of the most profound paragraphs, pages and chapters I’ve ever read.

This is one of my favorite books of all time, perhaps my most favorite. I need a long time to think about and sort out all the ideas in this book. After spending the past month reading and studying it, it’s become clear to me that I need to adjust my point of view on many issues. One thing is certain I will carry with me the ideas, concepts, and most importantly, the way of thinking that I’ve learned in Enlightenment Now for the rest of my life.
  • This is an interesting book to review. I've read a lot of reviews of the book before actually reading the book which is fairly rare for me. I usually only read one or two book reviews at most. To be upfront, I personally enjoy Pinker's style, and agreed with him on most of the issues he presented already. I also appreciate that Pinker does a great job of explaining his ideas clearly, in a way that I understand how he came to such an idea, whether or not I actually agree with the reasoning process.

For the most part, I have found that the criticisms of Pinker seem less strong after having read the book. Not all criticisms, but many. Pinker's data of some progress for humans is, in totality, certainly hard to argue with. The picture painted is of great progress in the past couple centuries, and it is almost perverse to disagree with this. We certainly still have a long way to go, but Pinker's point that we should appreciate what we've already accomplished is well-taken.

Some have taken issue with Pinker's presentation of the Enlightenment. I would certainly agree that Pinker does not provide a strong history of the Enlightenment. On the other hand, Pinker uses the word "Enlightenment" to mean a set of ideas associated with reason, science, and humanism. While I agree this may not be a typical or even historically useful definition, he makes this association clear very early on, so that I don't see it as much of a criticism. He mostly uses Enlightenment for the set of ideas he proposes are important for human flourishing.

As I said, I find most of what Pinker says credible, but I think that he sometimes too easily vanquishes an argument. His environmentalism and anti-AI arguments seem to me to defeat the arguments of his opponents a bit too easily. I personally am skeptical of an intelligence boom in AI, but I don't think Pinker argues against the strongest arguments in favor of such an intelligence boom (or the reasons to invest in containing a superintelligence). For the most part, though, I think he fairly represents opponents's arguments in the book where I have some familiarity with the background. It appeared to me he may have painted some environmentalism a bit too negatively, but it seems mostly so that he can embrace neo-environmentalism (i.e., ecomodernism or ecopragmatism)

The final part of the book on humanism was also an interesting addition. It is certainly the section with the least number of graphs and data. What stood out most to me here was that Pinker has a very negative opinion of Nietzsche (I don't know enough about Nietzsche to determine how biased a perspective this is).

Overall, I enjoyed the book. Pinker is a very clear, concise writer for the most part, and his arguments don't require more than a bit of sense and data to understand. That's not to say that these are obvious or necessarily true arguments, but that the reasons for believing them are laid out for all to see. I don't really see how the idea that we've made a ton of progress in human flourishing in the past couple of centuries could be controversial, but perhaps I just agree too much with the measurements of flourishing that Pinker uses.

"Main character start week and unappreciated, gains a little strength and is catapulted into another Society where he is still unappreciated, and his power is not yet recognized.
Looking forward to book two, where I hope the character will leave the small pond that the school has become and face a more serious set of threats, there does not seem to be much at the school to challenge him now; but the school is just kids and there are real threats in this world. Still I like a leading lady, even if it is only a hopeful dream."

  • I'll be honest, I like the story. I like the characters. I even have to admit that the plot is better than many I've read.

So why just 2 stars. It comes down to one simple flaw that is common to the LitRPG/Anime inspired tales. The main character is just too powerful.

I don't want to give this review, but I feel I have to, because it does bother me a lot that the main character has been given so much power. It really detracted from the relationship building and classes that most magical academy tales gain the most strength from. Instead this tale becomes something of a strange pokemon duel descriptive series, with the main character's familiar forced to fight again and again (and again, and again) due to the strange nature of the school and the students. It ruined my enjoyment enough that in the end I took away 1.5 stars and dropped a story from high 3 (posted as 4 star) to low 2 (and posted as 2 star)
  • I can't Waite for the next one to come out. The story was really frustrating, in that by 45% through the book you knew you would only get into two weeks of the school, and knew you would left needing more. When the next books are not even written yet. the story was well laid out, and character development was great. Other than wanting the story longer and the next books out, there was a few things that did slow down the story flow. The author had a lot of repeat or too lengthy too detail ed explanation s that could have been more succinct my worded. I could easily skip over a few paragraphs with out looking the flow of the story line, when explaining the way magic worked in this new wonderful world. However, nothing extra editing on story flow and content could not easily fix. I still feel in love with this story and need many more books in this series.it has so may wonderful possibility and I need more!!
  • Main character start week and unappreciated, gains a little strength and is catapulted into another Society where he is still unappreciated, and his power is not yet recognized.
Looking forward to book two, where I hope the character will leave the small pond that the school has become and face a more serious set of threats, there does not seem to be much at the school to challenge him now; but the school is just kids and there are real threats in this world. Still I like a leading lady, even if it is only a hopeful dream.
  • This book was a new twist in LitRpg. - the main character as well as most people get power/magic by summoning familiars to bond with and the type of familiar affects what the summoner can and can't do in many ways. I am already looking forward to next book in series
  • I tried this one more on a whim than anything else. It is a surprisingly engaging story. I really enjoyed it. I’ll definitely be looking for the next one.
  • Ok this was a seriously good book. I am like an addict jonesing for my next fix. So please hurry with the next in the series.
  • Nice read , a little slow and a wee bit confusing for me. But the book straighten everything out . I will buy the next one
  • This book starts a little slow. I considered shelving it in favor of the next book on my to read list but i enjoyed Martys other books so i stayed with it and am glad I did. I am a fairly harsh critic at times and only give 5 stars to books I couldnt put down.

PDF Tactics A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions Gregory Koukl 0025986282929 Books

"As a student in high school I learned that it isn’t good to tell a teacher that she is wrong, even when you know the subject better than she does. It is better to ask a question and to shape that question in such a way that the teacher will realize her mistake while attempting to answer the question. I never formalized that method, but Gregory Koukl does in his book Tactics. But rather than addressing how not to offend someone who has the ability to influence your grade, Koukl approaches this from the standpoint of how to share your faith. These days, we encounter many people who are offended by Christian beliefs. The tactics Koukl outlines in his book can help us to reduce the conflict and help them discover the truth of what we are saying for themselves. And even if they don’t, perhaps the people listening will.
The meat of the book is three questions that we can ask that will cause people to consider what they are saying. Often, people are just repeating things that other people have said, without giving any thought to the validity of the argument. These three questions may cause the person to see the weakness in their argument.
• What do you mean by that?
• How did you come to that conclusion?
• Have you ever considered?
The great thing about these questions is that they aren’t limited to a adversarial situation. You might be talking to a close friend and hear them say something that doesn’t sound quite right. “What do you mean by that?” Your child might say something like, “I don’t think I should play with Jane anymore.” You might ask, “How did you come to that conclusion?” or simply, “Why?”
One of the things that Koukl brings out about asking questions is that you can direct the conversation without taking sides on an issue. You don’t even have to be certain of what the right answer is. Perhaps, once you discover what the other person is saying and why they are saying it, you will agree with them. But when they are wrong, those questions may help them to see where they went wrong.
This is the best book on sharing your faith that I’ve read. Unlike other books that tell you what to say about the gospel, this book focuses more on the practical ways we can improve communication. While there are a few things I’m not sure I agree with him on, this is a book that every Christian who wishes to improve communication with non-believers should read. But the people who will benefit the most are the people in leadership positions who must deal with people who disagree with them. I can see where a teacher of a small group might put this to use if there is a student who insists on pushing strange doctrine during class. Rather than getting into an argument that disturbs the other class members, one could ask questions of the person and bring them around, or at least, make the other students aware that the person’s ideas are not correct."

  • Synopsis This book may not be what you would initially expect from one filed under the category of Apologetics. The author doesn't set out to pen an in-depth A to Z defense of the Christian faith as so many volumes before have already accomplished in staggering detail. No, Gregory Koukl is determined to help Christians be wise as serpents and harmless as doves when confronted with challenges to their faith. Hence the title, Tactics.

Koukl differentiates between strategy and tactics when it comes to defending the Christian faith. Strategy concerns the overall big picture of Apologetics. This panoramic vista consists in comprehensive knowledge of every aspect of Christianity. This insight can then be utilized in striking against all the Satanic powers that exalt themselves above the knowledge of God via both offensive and defensive attacks.

This is all well and good, for there are many volumes available that do just that. However, the author deliberately does not broach this broad subject matter. Instead he engages in the tactics needed in order to get to the end goal of proving Christianity and debunking all arguments against it.

Koukl writes, "A sharp lawyer needs more than facts to make his case in court. He needs to know how to use his knowledge well. In the same way, we need a plan to artfully manage the details of dialogues we have with others. This is where tactics come in."

Tactics, therefore in Christian Apologetics refers to the way we communicate our knowledge of the faith in order to disarm our opponents' arguments.

Koukl has several valuable methods of dialoging with our opponents. I'll outline some of these below

The Columbo method - named in honor of the television detective from a bygone era. This tactic instructs us that when someone disputes your worldview don't respond with a diatribe defending your view, simply ask questions.

Koukl writes, "The key to the Columbo tactic is to go on the offensive in an inoffensive way by using carefully selected questions to productively advance the conversation. Simply put, never make a statement, at least not at first, when a question will do the job."

The Columbo method has three steps. Step one is to gain information. This is done by asking clarifying questions, such as 'What do you mean by that?"

Step two attempts to reverse the burden of proof. Again, Koukl, "In any dispute, the person who advances an opinion, claim, or point of view has the job of defending it. It's not your duty to prove him wrong. It's his duty to prove himself right."

The related question to toss into the dialog would be, "How did you come to that conclusion?"

Step three has us ask leading questions to aid us in steering the conversation in the direction we desire it to go. A carefully worded leading question will help you take charge of the situation instead of letting the critic take it to unholy places. To launch these tactical verbal missiles a person will need two things knowledge of the subject matter and a plan of attack.

Other methods include the suicide tactic. Many ideologies are self-refuting. For example the statement "There is no absolute truth" cannot possibly be true if absolute truth doesn't exist. Using the Columbo questions this falsehood can quickly be exposed.

The author explores several other methods in succeeding chapters. As well, he also dedicates a couple of chapters guiding readers on how to deal with overbearing personalities and pseudo academic arguments.

Recommendations I admit, I profited greatly from this little book. it wasn't what I expected, but that ended up being beneficial. If I had first read a massive tome on Apologetics my arsenal would have been well stocked yet I'd have been woefully under-trained on how to actually fire any of my weapons. Tactics teaches the fundamentals of maneuvering a conversational obstacle course. It does it in a winsome manner, peppered with personal experiences from Koukl's many encounters. I especially benefited from the chapter on taking the roof off. It contained many arguments that critics use and how to dismantle them quickly and effectively. It is a section I will commit to memory and return to often.

I think this book should be required reading for every Christian. Much like I think Logic 101 should be a core class for all high school students. The world of ideas is becoming increasingly hostile to Christian beliefs. We should always stand ready with a reason for the hope that we have in Christ Jesus. Tactics does an excellent job of starting us done the daunting path of Christian Apologetics.

Symbols are often seen as constituting an international language and to some extent they do, but that language is far from universal--context means everything in this complicated but engrossing form of communication.

Take, for example, a cross, a crane, or a swastika each one has a different and distinct significance and meaning for a Buddhist, an art historian, or a student of the occult. 1000 Symbols resolves the problem by offering groupings of related symbols, every one with a neat definition of its history and its cross-cultural meanings.

"This is a REALLY interesting book. I'm an artist (mostly painter, but also do illustration) and I do a lot of tiny, intricate patterns in my work. Despite the abundance of pattern inspiration available in the world, a lot of times I get a little stuck as far as simple designs I can use for repeating patterns when I'm in the middle of a piece. This book is a fabulous resource- not only does it provide literally a thousand symbols, it provides a few paragraphs of information on each symbol. It sort of lets me take my work to another level- instead of just drawing random designs, I can actually incorporate meaningful icons into the patterns I create. I can also take the symbols (which are each illustrated in a clean, clock line drawing) and use them as a starting point for a design or unique symbol all my own.

This is a great source of inspiration for artists and designers, and a great book for anyone interested in iconography and symbols in general."

1000 Symbols What shapes mean in art and myth Rowena Shepherd Rupert Shepherd 9781782404569 Books Reviews

  • This is a REALLY interesting book.

This is a great source of inspiration for artists and designers, and a great book for anyone interested in iconography and symbols in general.
  • Please don't get this book if you want a repository of images to use in your projects. If on the otther hand, you want a great variety of information as a basis for exploration then this book is perfect for you. This book is a very good place to start if you want to know about symbols and it categorizes them quite neatly even going into shapes, colors and numbers. I enjoy the fact that they did not use classical representations of the pictures but their own interpretation of it. In the Internet age you can find such pictures easily. As an artist, this book gives me enough information about each symbol without going into too much detail so I find it useful. With over 300 pages, the book is bigger than I imagined but well worth its weight. Do not buy this if you are looking for an indepth analysis but rather an extensive overview. I hope this helps.
  • Lots of symbols
  • not what I was looking for, but found some symbols I didn't know or even thought about...
  • Love this book, how it's set up, love the index, but most of all love the descriptions of various cultures' ideas about same symbol, a smorgasbord of meanings providing options for personal symbolism and spirituality.

    Good book.
  • This particular book is tops.Excellent! What more is there to say? Well illustrated and explained in detail every meanings symbol and origin.
perfect reference material for every age.
  • This seems to be information that a friend needs for her work.
  • Very happy with my book!
